Information

Sun Damaged Skin

While the trauma of aging skin is nowhere near as great as pigmented lesions, the simple fact remains that, most people do not like the thought of aging.
Exposure to the sun accelerates the aging process of the skin and can cause disruption in the normal blood supply to the skin (which results in disorders such as diffuse redness) It can also cause irregular pigmentation that shows as freckles (ephelides) or age-spots (solar lentigines), and irregular pore size. AW3® systems offer clinically proven treatment to sun-damaged skin, covering both skin rejuvenation and pigmented aspects.

Alternatives for Sun-Damaged Skin

Make-up: This is simple, painless, and relatively inexpensive, but it is only a cover-up and requires an everlasting commitment to maintain the appearance desired by the client.
Surgery: No effective traditional surgical method for treating all the effects of sun-damaged skin exists. Laser surgery (cosmetic resurfacing of the skin) is available, but is expensive and recovery time is comparatively long.

 The Science

The AW3® treatment works by directing well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by two of the body’s own natural chemicals—melanin in the pigmented areas and hemoglobin in the red blood.

Both these pigments convert the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the parts of the cells in which the melanin is stored and to damage the surrounding treated area in order to boost natural collagen production.

The visible light produced by the AW3® systems is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and the right amount of energy to destroy the targets and minimize the risk of damaging skin tissues.

The AW3® Skin Rejuvenation system will treat diffuse redness and pigmented disorders caused by sun damage and also improve the skin texture.

The procedure will additionally treat larger skin pores and redness. Both Pigmentation and Skin Rejuvenation are quick and simple procedures that do not interfere with your normal daily routine. Both are aimed at repairing skin damage found on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

FAQ

Is it suitable for all skin tones?

Skin rejuvenation is based on light absorption in melanin and hemoglobin, therefore treatments are more effective on light skin that is not suntanned at the time of treatment. However, AW3® systems have pre-programmed settings for each treatment, so all skin tones can ensure they will receive the correct energy output for their complexion.

Age spots contain a substance called melanin, and diffuse redness contains hemoglobin. When cells contain lots of these substances, they are condensed together, this is where the AW3® light will target the area to rejuvenate it almost immediately.

How long does a treatment take?

The glass prism within the AW3® applicator that guides the light to the skin is 15 mm by 50 mm so that a large area can be targeted in one flash of light. Our system has the largest spot size on the market and is the only system to have auto flashes without delay. This means doing a facial will only take 5-10 minutes.

Does it hurt?

Skin type is a fundamental effecting factor in this treatment due to the high level of pigment in the skin. Pain tolerance is very individual from person to person and machine to machine. We have a variety of machines including no pain machines and the sensations of each are completely different.

No anesthetics are required, and most people describe the sensation as similar to that of a rubber band snapping onto the skin. You may find it comforting to cool the skin after the treatment.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

The light used is a completely safe, visible light. Potentially harmful wavelengths are removed by our unique filtering system.

Since tanning takes place by accumulation of pigment (melanin) in the skin, it is, however, important to avoid tanning (sun, solarium or self-tanning cream) before and during the treatment period. Otherwise, your tanned skin will absorb more light, which makes treatment less effective. Generally, no post-treatment care is necessary. However, people with sensitive skin may benefit from applying an ice pack to the face immediately after treatment or applying an ointment prescribed by the doctor. Furthermore, it is recommended to use sunscreen (minimum SPF 60) for a few weeks following treatment.

What can I expect?

You may notice that the skin looks a little “dirty” for a few days following treatment. After that, you will find that your skin looks smoother and fresher. You might choose to have 1 – 2 annual maintenance treatments to keep your youthful appearance.

How can I be sure AW3® systems are safe and effective?

Clinical trials documenting AW3 safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors before the release of the product. The results of these tests are then published in respected, refereed medical journals. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.
